The game of bocce ball, also known as bocci or boccie, is a game that requires strategy. Bocce possibly first appeared in ancient Egypt. But it took off among the Romans under Emperor Augustus. As more Italian immigrants arrived at the turn of the 20th century, it experienced enormous growth in popularity. Today, playing bocce is a relaxing, competitive way to spend time outside with good friends.
Getting Started with Bocce Ball
1. Gather your bocce ball set.
Eight colored balls, four of each color, usually green and red, are in a traditional bocce set. It is along with a smaller ball such as the jack or pallino.
- Numerous studies show that different bocce ball sizes correspond to different skill levels. Typically, beginners and children use more petite balls, but professionals use larger ones. Standard bocce balls have a diameter of 107 mm (4.2 inches) and a weight of 920 g (about 2 lbs).
- A basic set of bocce will cost you at least $20, but a professional set may cost you upwards of $100.
2. Choose your teams.
Two single opponents or between two teams of two, three, or four players can play bocce ball. Groups of five or more are not advisable because some players won’t get an opportunity to bowl. It is so because there aren’t enough balls for everyone.
Playing Bocce Ball
1. Flip a coin or randomly decide on which team gets to throw out the jack.
The teams alternate throwing out the jack at the start of each new frame, so it doesn’t matter who goes first.
2. Throw out the jack into a prescribed zone.
The team who won the coin toss or was chosen randomly to begin the game has two chances to throw the jack into a zone. It extends meters (16 feet) and finishes meters (24 feet) from the endboard of the court. The second team gets a chance to throw the jack if the team that throws it first cannot place it in the proper zone.
- According to an alternative set of rules, the jack merely needs to pass a regulator pin that marks the court’s center.
- You can throw the jack wherever you want if you’re not playing bocce on a court, as long as it’s far enough away from the other players to prevent the game from getting too simple.
3. After successfully throwing the jack, throw out the first bocce ball.
The group that threw out the jack must throw the first bocce. The goal is to bring the bocce ball as near the jack as possible. The fault line, roughly 10 feet (3.0 m) above the bottom of the baseboard, is where players must stand to throw the bocce ball.
- You can throw a bocce ball in a variety of ways. Most people often bowl the bocce ball from a position closer to the ground or higher in the air while throwing it underhanded with their palm cupped against the underside of the ball. On the other hand, some people prefer to throw the ball by cupping it from the top rather than the bottom and launching it like they would throw it underhandedly.
4. Let the second team bowl their bocce ball.
The team who doesn’t get the opportunity to bowl yet gets a chance now. To bring the ball as close to the jack as possible, one member of each team bowls.
5. Decide which team gets to continue bowling all their remaining bocce balls.
The team whose bocce ball is furthest from the jack has the opportunity to bowl its remaining three bocce balls in succession—each time attempting to get as near the jack as possible.
- When using bocce to bowl, hitting the jack is permissible. The only helpful result of hitting the jack is repositioning your target’s center of gravity.
- It’s usually referred to as a “kiss” or “baci” if the bocce ball is in touch with the jack. The throw is typically worth two points if the bocce ball is still in touch with the jack after the frame.
6. Permit the team whose throws are incomplete to bowl out.
All 8 bocce balls at varied distances towards the end of the frame must surround the jack.
Scoring and Continuation
1. Measure which team’s bocce is closest to the jack.
After all, teams have finished tossing, the team with the ball closest to the jack receives points. Depending on the position of their other balls, this team will score one or more points, while the opposing team will not.
2. Give the winning team one point for each ball closer than the closest ball from the losing team.
Depending on the rules you decide to play by, bocce balls that are in touch with or “kiss” the jack at the end of the play are worth two points rather than one.
3. The switch ends on the bocce court and plays another frame.
Tally the points at the end of each frame. At the opposite end of the bocce court, start the next frame.
4. Continue playing until a team gets 12 points.
Keep playing until a team reaches either 15 or 21.
