Paul Romer, World Bank’s chief economist, described Aadhaar as the ‘the most sophisticated ID system in the world’. Aadhaar was initiated in an attempt to unify the personal details of Indian citizens in the government database. This unification was done to efficiently provide government welfare programmes such as subsidies, unemployment benefit schemes, etc. to the citizens. It is also mandatory to avail several services like filing income tax returns. Therefore, it has become imperative to update the Aadhaar card details.
Women, especially, have to update their name change in their Aadhaar card after getting married. It will not only help them benefit from government programmes but also aid in availing financial products such as personal loans.
Process of changing card details after marriage
To change your name in Aadhaar card after getting married, you have to go to an Aadhaar enrolment centre or Aadhaar Kendra. To locate your nearest enrolment centre you can follow these steps:
Step 1: Go to the official UIDAI website
Step 2: Click on the “My Aadhaar” tab
Step 3: Under the “Get Aadhaar”, select the “Locate an Enrolment Centre”
Step 4: On the next page, there will be three options available “State”, “Postal (PIN) Code” and “Search Box”. Select any one as per your convenience.
Step 5: Select whether you want to search for banks/post offices enrolment centres or permanent ones.
Step 6: Click “Locate a Centre”
You might not find any centre in your own postal code, which is why it is advised you select the “State” or “Search box” option to look for your nearest centre.
After you have located the nearest centre, head over to the same with your self-attested documents, which will be necessary for changing your name.
Requisite documents to update Aadhaar card details:
- PAN card
- Voter ID card
- Passport
- Ration card
- Driving license
- Any other Government-issued photo ID card
You have to fill an Aadhaar update form to make the necessary changes. This process is simple and requires only a nominal fee of Rs. 25. You will be given a URN which can be used to track your status. To check your update status, go to their website, click on “Check Aadhaar Update Status” under the “My Aadhaar” tab. Enter your EID along with the time of enrolment to track your update status.
When the update is complete you can avail e-Aadhaar and get the benefits by downloading it.
Importance of updating your card details
Direct benefit transfer:
If you have a bank account linked to your Aadhaar card, the amount from your LPG subsidy will be directly transferred to your bank account. In case you are unemployed, your account will also be credited with amounts from unemployment schemes like the domestic LPG scheme or MGNREGA. Therefore, updating your Aadhaar card details will ensure you are profited with these schemes after marriage.
Passport:
If you are planning for an international summer vacation under Rs. 5 Lakh, a passport is essential. And, thanks to the several e-Aadhaar benefits, you can apply for one online. When applying online, you are entitled to receive a passport in just 10 days. Note that the government has made Aadhaar compulsory when applying for a passport.
