Around 42 crore Indians have permanent account numbers (PAN) or in short PAN card as of February 2019, according to reports released by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). It is issued by the Income Tax Department of India to record all financial transactions of an individual for tax calculations.

How to avail a replacement of PAN online?
Step 1 – Go to the official web portal of NSDL.
Step 2 – Click on ‘Changes or correction in existing PAN data/reprint of PAN card (no changes in existing PAN data).
Step 3 – A new tab will appear on your screen, wherein you have to enter your name, PAN number, Aadhaar number, date of birth, e-mail ID and mobile number.
A token number will be generated and sent to your registered e-mail ID, which is useful for future reference.
Step 4 – You have to submit all relevant documents. This can be done offline, wherein attested copies of Aadhaar, acknowledgement form and application have to be posted to the PAN services unit of NSDL.
Step 5-You can submit all relevant documents digitally as well in the following methods to apply for duplicate PAN card –
- e-KYC
In this method, relevant documents don’t have to be uploaded separately. Only OTP verification has to be done through the mobile number linked with Aadhaar. Individuals have to e-sign the verification process using a digital signature.
- Uploading documents manually
In this method, scanned copies of all relevant documents, photographs and signature have to be uploaded, along with OTP verification and e-sign.
Step 6 – Choose whether you want a printed card or an e-PAN card. Provide e-mail ID accordingly if you choose an e-PAN card.
Step 7- A page with title ‘Contact and other details’ will be displayed. Fill the page with appropriate information for successful submission of the application for duplicate PAN card online.
Step 8 – Payment for the generation of duplicate PAN card has to be made in this step. Upon successful fund transfer, an acknowledgement form will be displayed verifying the same.
After successful application, a duplicate PAN card will be dispatched within two weeks of application.
Note that the process to avail a duplicate PAN card involves payment of a fee. How to get a duplicate PAN card offline?
Step 1 – Go to the official website of NSDL, and download the application form from ‘Changes or correction in existing PAN data/reprint of PAN card’.
Step 2 – Fill in the form, and input the ten-digit PAN number for reference.
Step 3 – Attach two cross-signed passport size photographs.
Step 4 – Self-attested copies of all documents, along with the payment amount, has to be sent via speed post to the PAN services centre of NSDL.
Step 5 – A 15-digit acknowledgement number will be sent to your registered mobile number, which can be utilised to track your application process.
Within two weeks of verification of application and related documents sent, the duplicate PAN card will be dispatched to your address.
